PENG KE

Biography / Selected Works / Exhibitions / Related News

Peng Ke was born in Changsha, Hunan in 1992, and grew up in Shenzhen. Graduated with a BA in Photography from Rhode Island School of Design in 2015, she now lives and works between Shanghai and Los Angeles. Searching for a sense of order in public space and urban infrastructure, her lens impersonates a flâneur, documenting the confounding and interconnecting contingency. Growing up in Shenzhen during the initial stage of the reform and opening-up, she focuses on urban experience and image production as the core of her practice. Represented by artificial lights, public installations, and concrete architectures, artificial landscapes invading the real-world scenes are constantly reconstructed, projecting a signifier that overlays on both the body and perception of modern city dwellers. Operating as an empathy mechanism, Peng's visual language introduces the viewers to the symbiotic system within the public sphere, in which the relationship between subject and object intermingle; empathy reveals the hidden intimacy and reverberated alienation that coexists in the private space, extending the possibilities of reinterpreting urban aesthetics between personal experience and collective memory amidst rapid urban transitions. While filtering sugar-coated, dreamlike color to daily surroundings, Peng’s images hint the numbing effects of plastic products camouflaged in their animated and cheerful appearance, symbolizing the economy of manufacturing activities and the homogeneous visage of everyday life.

Recent solo exhibitions include: Grand City and Serendipitous Trésor, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2021; Agoramaniac, Jimei x Arles International Photography Festival, Xiamen, 2019; Leaving Speed, Lianzhou Museum of Photography, Lianzhou, 2018; I’ve seen many people although they’ve never seen me, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2018; and The Secured, Salt Projects, Beijing, 2018. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at Guangzhou Airport Biennial, Guangzhou; Gallery Weekend Beijing, Beijing; Format Festival, Derby; Beijing Photo Biennial, Beijing. Peng was also awarded the Abigail Cohen Fellowship by the Magnum Foundation, Fondazione EMGdotART Prize, Hahnemühle New Talent Photography Award; and was nominated for the Huayu Youth Award, Foam Paul Huf Award, and Jimei x Arles Discovery Award.
